File Extensions and Archives
Moving files over the internet can be a problem- like when email attachments turn to toast. Even when it looks like a simple hop from your computer to our print queue, please take these steps to make your uploads more reliable.
1. Use File Extensions
Tacking the appropriate extension to the end of your filename eliminates the guesswork of "How do I open this file?" If you consider the file formats developed for internet use, like PDF and JPEG, you'll hardly ever see those files without their .pdf or .jpg extensions. Those extensions clear things up (for all types of computers and their operators). Below is a list of file types and their official extensions. For a more extensive list, check out- file extensions.
2. Zip or Stuff your files
Making an archive of your files protects them during internet transfers, especially when sent as an email attachment. Email programs vary in how they encode and decode binary file attachments. Making an archive of your file with either Zip or Stuffit (Stuffit is mostly on a Mac) is the best protection you can give your file before you launch it into cyberspace.
